CALLING ALL THRIVERS
The Women’s Resource Center at Cornell University is collaborating with artists and survivors of violence to create the project, “We Step Into the Light.”
The purpose of this project is to raise awareness about sexual assault, relationship and gender-based violence, and stalking through art created for “thrivers,” which is a term that has been chosen to replace the term “survivors.”
We are looking for thrivers who are interested in taking part in this
project. In “We Step Into the Light,” each thriver will be paired with an artist. This pair will get to know each other through several conversations that focus on understanding the thriver. The interview questions will focus on how the survivor has thrived, not on the trauma the survivor has experienced. The thriver will be asked questions such as, “What is your favorite color? What makes you special? What is your favorite thing about yourself? What foods do you like? Where do you want to be in 5 years? What brings you peace? What makes you laugh? What are your hobbies?"
These conversations will be the inspiration for the work that the artist creates. The artwork will be a gift to the thriver. The goal of the artist’s work is to display the uniqueness and beauty of the thriver. The thriver has the option of remaining anonymous if they prefer.
The artwork will be exhibited in an opening reception on Friday, April 10th from 6pm to 9pm in the Baker Portico at the Physical Sciences Building on the Cornell University Campus. The reception will include music and refreshments. The art will then be displayed at the Mann Library on the Cornell Campus from Saturday, April 11th to Friday, April 17th.
If you would like to be involved with this project, or if you want to receive more information before you decide, please contact Angela Han at [email protected]
